The Dead Reserves follows the global adventures of the members of the Post Live Adjustments agency. A team of talented people, all of whom can channel the dead to aid them in the various cases they’re working, by using totemic artifacts connected to the deceased.

Sydney Suburbs, Black Town.

Evan Salt lives at the end of the line. His dad Todd has locked in syndrome and it’s his mum Linda’s full-time job to look after him. She keeps waiting for Todd to come back again, and that hope has become her obsession. She ignores everything else.

Living on TV dinners and fending for himself Evan was mostly neglected as a child and has grown into a quiet, isolated teen. An easy target for bullies because of his weight and strange disposition Evan was instead overlooked due to a naturally unsettling factor that scares most people away from him. It would later manifest itself as Evan’s connection to the dead, most notably dead animals, insects and anything that slithers or crawls.

Animals and insects have long been considered not to have spirits, but Evan knows better. Anything that lives leaves an imprint on the spirit web. The smaller things are Evans friends. They listen when nobody else does. They’re invisible mostly, like him.

When the PLA’s Susan Smith came across Evan doing one of her road safety talks in schools across Australia she groomed him for a weekend job as office tea boy for the city branch of the PLA. She has plans to make him an operative when he finishes school. Even Susan finds Evan creepy, though. But also extremely useful.

Evan has a particular dislike of authority figures and anyone who would be mean to children. He hates to see himself in other people, despite having embraced his own strange existence.

Which leads us to …

Prologue

…  Poor Charlie White.

Charlies dad has been touching him since he came back permanently from his tour of duty with the army. Charlie let it slip and now he’s a walking target for any bounce with a bad sense of humor and no morals in the school yard.

And that’s fucking oath, bro. Charlie’s been getting a real bad time of late. Things are bad at school and worse at home.

Maybe creepy Evan can help. Let’s see …

Emma Campbell was raised solely by her mum from she was an infant when her dad left them just after she was born. She wasn’t popular at school. She was a sickly youth and life was hard. It was about to get harder.

When Emma turned fourteen she was suddenly and near fatally diagnosed with acute liver failure. Close to death Emma experienced her first viewing of the afterlife in the hospital surrounding her. She put the ghosts she’d witnessed down to delirium until her life was saved by a last minute transplant from a last minute donor.

Lucky for Emma she awoke with a fully functioning liver. Not so lucky, she was permanently bonded to the spirit of its previous owner; Phil ‘The Haggis’ Hogarth. No ordinary Joe, Phil was once Scotland’s greatest ever wrestler. But in his old age he’d become senile and reclusive.

Rejuvenated in the afterlife by his totemic bonding with Emma (via a shared liver,) Phil has in death, learned how to live again, and Emma has got a new chance at life.

Emma lost her father and Phil grew old never having a family, yet despite their bickering Phil is the dad Emma never had. Emma is the daughter Phil never had.

Embracing their odd situation as freelancers for the PLA, together they are the unstoppable duo of Haggis and the Hen!

Andy Forson used to be a paramilitary. He grew up in a housing estate where the fastest way to succeed was to join the local gang, work your way up from the bottom and eventually you’d be an affluent pillar of the community.

That was the plan anyway.

Andy went to jail for attempted murder and spent five years at her majesty’s pleasure before getting an early release under the Good Friday Agreement. It was never about politics for Andy. That’s just what you said to make all those illegal dealings sound pious, backed by a cause.

When he got out Andy planned to go back to his wicked ways only to find he’d inherited the gift of the sight.

He could see the dead.

And consequently he could see all the people his friends with the balaclavas on had murdered. All the folk whose deaths had been a consequence of his shady dealings.

Sick with guilt, Andy moved to Scotland for ten years. To escape his past. That’s where he met then director of the PLA William Hattridge. Hattridge recruited Andy and now Andy’s back in Belfast under an alias in order to care for his ailing mother Agnes who’s suffering from cancer.

While he’s not the nicest or the brightest or the least xenophobic person on earth, Andy is trying to change. He’s got a good heart and he feels a need to make amends for his past. He’s not quite there yet though. Which leads us to …

When an old friend asks Andy to look into drug trafficking in his area that’s so far seen a local activist and his daughter go missing in a crime the (bought off) police aren’t treating as suspicious, Andy reluctantly becomes involved and inevitably gets more than he bargained for.

Instead of the local paramilitary groups Andy finds the drugs are coming off the boat from China. The triads, co-distributing with the Russians are shifting uncut heroin and sending girls back home in crates to fuel Asia’s underbelly sex trade.

When you have triads shooting at you on a case you never wanted, you better hope your Celtic warlord totem, one Vercingetorix (though Andy calls him Vinny,) is going to help you out.

Sadly for Andy the Triads aren’t the only ones he’s annoyed lately with his backward thinking ways …

Ateequah Essa was once very beautiful but now has burn scars on one side of her face from an attack she suffered in her teens by her own family members when she refused to Marry the man they had chosen for her.

Ateequah is a practitioner of Islam and also a vocal advocate of women’s rights within her community that has seen her become something of an outcast and quiet inspiration for many of the women that she has met.

She doesn’t believe that fighting for her rights and her faith are mutually exclusive nor contradictory. Ateequah travels widely as a founding member of the WIIN (Women in Islam Network) and uses her own story as a parable for change.

She is softly spoken but courageous and an advocate for genuine change.

Investigating the disappearance of Fahima Hassan  at the behest of her former lover, Ateequah has been stonewalled by everyone in Fahima’s community, including most of her family. When Fahima’s sister Parsa locates Ateequah privately she breaks down  and confesses her sister was likely killed due to fears she was planning to leave her husband, Kahil.

The community have hushed the whole affair up and wont talk to the police. Knowing Ateequah can’t bring her sister back, Parsa has asked that she simply find proof and deliver justice in the only way possible. Quietly and mercilessly.

Ateequah has brought her totemic gum shield with her. Just in case.

COVER ART By Richard Harrison

Leonard Lime is a jaded optimist. A sometimes gambler. A weekend dad and a man with a peculiar talent.

He’s also co-partner of Lime And Hattridge Post Life Adjustments – A specialist agency that work out of London and have branches in Sydney, New York, Hong Kong, Dublin and Belfast.

The PLA specialize in outsourcing for unique cases. Cases requiring unique talents. Talents that entail using totemic artifacts to channel helpful individuals. It just so happens that those individuals are, well,  dead.

Every staffer at the PLA has a few handy totems on retainer. Leonard’s no different. One of his favorites is a piece of prehistoric bone that he keeps tied around his neck for emergencies. It comes in handy when things get rough. Particularly when dealing with folks like Paul Mthembu and his associate Mickey Taylor, notorious people traffickers and all round nasty chappies.

Leonard’s been looking into them for Victor Naidoo, a man who’s daughter went missing on a holiday to her familial home in South Africa two years ago, and who has recently been identified in a London brothel. By Victor’s brother no less, but that’s another story.

Nosey Leonard got a bit too close to the dirt and now Paul and Mickey have Leonard tied up. It’s happening below right now.

Let’s see how it plays out.
